On the final day of the Tour de Suisse women's race, Kasia Niewiadoma (Canyon-SRAM) launched an attack midway through the 100km fourth stage.
Her advantage over the peloton grew so large that for a time she was the de facto GC leader, but in the end the 28-year-old lost the stage win to Niamh Fischer-Black (Team SD Walks) in a two-man sprint contest. She also dropped one spot from the overall podium by seven seconds. She said, "Honestly, with Marlen [Reusser] and Demi [Vollering] behind me and their two huge engines, I knew I was just going to have to luck out. If they got a flat tire or something happened to them ...... But of course, you don't wish that on your opponent," Niewiadoma said realistically about the possibility of taking the yellow jersey off Reusser's shoulders.
"It was really hot today, and I was cramping myself, so I was hoping that maybe the others would do the same."
Still, Reusser had to act on his own, as Vollering's work failed to close the gap. Although the result was not in Reusser's favor, Niewiadoma left his mark on the race, prompting a response from the other riders. She said, "I enjoyed the race here, and after the ITT I was disappointed because I knew I had good legs. I just wasn't in shape that day."
"I felt really good throughout. I was really happy that Tiffany [Cromwell] was in front of me. When I crossed on the bridge she did a great job setting me up before the climb. It was a great team effort," she said, thanking her teammates from the early breakaway. Nienyadoma's last individual victory came more than four years ago, when she won the fourth stage of the Women's Tour on June 13, 2019. Since then, she has finished second 12 times and third 10 times, often narrowly missing victory; after the 2022 season, she admitted to being upset about not winning a race that year and made some changes to her winter training program for 2023. In the spring, she was consistent, finishing sixth in Strade Bianche, fifth in the Tour de Flanders, fourth in the Amstel Gold Race, and on the podium in the Itzria Women's GC.
Runner-up in the final stage of the Tour de Suisse Women's race was not Nienyadoma's goal, but it was another step toward victory. Always aggressive in her racing, she tried time and time again to bring her own luck, rather than waiting for an opportunity to come her way.
