Olaf Kooi signed a two-year contract extension with Jumbo-Visma despite significant interest from other World Tour teams.
In a social media video to announce the contract extension, Jumbo-Visma said that Jonas Wingegaard and Christoph Rappold were recording a farewell message to Kooi, while Melaine Zeman of Director Sportif said, "Olaf is not going anywhere.
Couey moved to the WorldTour in 2021 from the Jumbo-Visma training team, where he won 21 races as a professional; in 2023 he won the Paris-Nice sprint race, and in the recent ZLM Tour he won the overall.
With Jumbo Visma focused on competing for the overall in the Grand Tours and the presence of Wout Van Aert and Laporte, Cooey's career with the team appeared to be limited. Initially, it appeared that the Dutchman would seek greater sprinting opportunities elsewhere, as did his compatriot Dylan Groenewegen, but in the end he chose to stay.
"I'm thrilled to be on this team for two more years.
"I've grown well over the past three years and feel at home here. I can get the most out of myself here in terms of team coaching and the race program. I hope to keep the momentum going for the next two years."
"Over the past three months, I have had thorough discussions with the team about Olaf's sporting future," Zeman explained.
"We have been open and honest with each other about the possibilities and the impossibilities. Everyone recognizes the strengths of the team and the riders. Together we consider the goal of the result, but also the growth of the rider is essential. I am glad that Olaf still subscribes to this philosophy."
[16Zeman added that Kooi's participation on the Jumbo Visma Cobblestone Classic team will increase in the coming years.
Earlier this week, Primoš Roglic suggested that he would be looking for his fourth overall win at this year's Vuelta a España.
"We have high hopes for Olaf and that means he will be in the Grand Tour next year," Zeman said.
"We think he has the potential for the classics in addition to sprinting at the highest level. He fits perfectly into our Classic strategy."
Kooi's contract extension comes as Richard Plagge's team searches for a new title sponsor after Jumbo announced it would withdraw from all sports sponsorship by the end of 2024.
Vingegaard and Van Aart will lead Jumbo Visma in the Tour de France, where they will be looking for a second overall win with the Danish climber.
