Lizzie Deignan has made an early comeback from her second pregnancy, revealing that she will compete in La Fresh Wallonne Femme on Wednesday.
Former world champion Lizzie Deignan gave birth to her second child in September and was scheduled to return to racing at La Vuelta Femina in early May.
However, she was added to the provisional entry list for La Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège last week. Trek-Segafredo told Cycling News that she is a reserve rider, but Degnan has now confirmed that she will wear a number and line up at the Belgian Hoy on Wednesday morning.
"Where did the 6 months go? Deignan wrote in a social media post on Monday, accompanied by a photo of himself and his two children.
"I actually can't put it into words.
It has not yet been confirmed whether Deignan will also line up in Liège on Sunday.
Deignan last raced in 2021, finishing the season in the Women's Tour after winning the inaugural Paris-Roubaix Femme. Last February, she announced that she was pregnant with her second child and would miss this season's races, but Trek-Segafredo showed support by extending her contract through 2024.
For Degnan, who gave birth to her first child in 2018 and signed with Trek-Segafredo while pregnant, this will be her second return to racing after pregnancy. The timing was similar, with the first birth also in September, followed by a return in April at the 2019 Ardennes Classic, then Amstel Gold and La Flèche Wallonne, before finishing seventh at Liège-Bastogne-Liège. She won the women's Tour that year. [20] In 2021, she won the Tour de Suisse, placed fourth in the Giro d'Italia Donnay, and took the title in that famous Roubaix.
Deignan has twice been on the podium at La Flèche Wallonne alongside Elisa Longo Borghini in the race, which finishes atop the rugged Mulle de Huy. Shirin Van Unrooy, who has a podium finish in Amstel, is the team's other mainstay, with Amanda Spratt and Gaia Lealini adding to their climbing prowess.
Degnan is aiming for her first Tour de France Femme after failing to compete in the first edition of the renewed Tour de France last year, and also has the World Championships in Glasgow in August in her sights.
