Jonas Vingegaard has signed a contract extension with the Dutch team that will keep him with Jumbo Visma until the end of the 2027 season The 2022 Tour de France winner's contract was due to expire at the end of next season.
"I've had a great journey with a team that has supported me in every way to get to where I am today," Vingegaard said in a statement released by the team on Tuesday.
"Every day we push each other and strive to get better. We will definitely reach even higher levels together. I'm excited to continue to grow within the team."
Binegaard turned pro with Jumbo Visma in 2019 after working part-time as a fish icing in a factory in Hanstholm on the North Sea coast for the Danish Continental team Coloquik.
He made his breakthrough at the 2021 Tour with an unexpected second-place finish after team leader Primoz Roglic retired in a crash in the opening week. He made good on that promise by beating Tadej Pogachar to win last year's Tour.
Team manager Richard Plagge said, "When he first came to the team, he was a diamond in the rough. Together we grew a lot and eventually won the Tour de France. If we are to remain at the top, Jonas is an integral part of our goal."
[12Vingegaard won both Ituria-Basque and Au Grand Camino in early 2023, each with three stage wins, but he was only third overall behind the dominant Pogachar in Paris-Nice.
Pogachar will compete in the Ardennes this week after winning the Tour de Flanders and the Amstel Gold Race. In contrast, Vingegaard is not scheduled to race until the Criterium du Dauphiné in June; the 26-year-old will start the Tour as Jumbo's sole leader.
"The Tour de France is very special. Standing on top of the podium was a great feeling," Wingegaard said.
"My goal is to win more races in the future, not just the Tour. To be on the team for another five years means everything to me. Now I can rest easy and focus even more on my goals."
[22Wingegaard is the second contract extension for Jambovisma in recent days, following the signing of Gent-Wevelgem and Doir de Hländeren winner Christophe Laporte to a new three-year contract.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding sponsorship, with Jumbo indicating that he will end his support at the end of 2024, the Dutch team appears to be planning for the future as usual. Besides Vingegaard and Laporte, the team has already signed 10 riders to contracts through 2025, including star riders Wout van Aert and Primoš Roglic.
