Julien Alaphilippe has been cleared to race Liège-Bastogne-Liège and will compete in the freestyle along with defending champion Remco Evenpoel.

Alaphilippe injured his knee in the Tour of Flanders and missed the Amstel Gold Race and La Flèche Wallonne.

The two-time world champion is not sure if he will cancel Liège, suggesting that if he does compete, it will only be to support current world champion Evenpoel.

Despite being the last race of the spring and despite having the Tour de France on his mind, Alaphilippe was determined to compete in Sunday's race.

"We will see what role Julien will play. He knows the course well and this race is perfect for him," said Gerd van Bont, director of Sürdahl Quick Step.

"The most important thing is that he can train and start without pain now."

Soudal-QuickStep has confirmed a full seven-man lineup for La Doyenne, with Evenpoel and Alaphilippe, plus Mauro Schmidt, Andrea Bagioli, and three of Evenpoel's expected Giro d'Italia domestiques, Ilan van Wilder, Louis Verweke, and Pieter Serry, joined them.

Evenpoel had a great season in Liege 12 months ago, winning the Vuelta a España and the World Championships with a long-distance solo victory after a stinging attack in La Redoute.

He heads into this year's race almost directly from Tenerife, where he is in his latest high-altitude training for next month's Giro d'Italia.

"Lemko is coming here from a high-altitude training camp and will be very motivated, especially since he will be the defending champion and owner of the rainbow jersey at the start," Van Bont said.

"He can count on his teammates in good conditions. We also need to see if the wind and rain expected on Sunday will affect the race, but as I said, I am confident."
