Tadei Pogachal was taken to the hospital and will undergo immediate surgery to treat a broken wrist suffered in Sunday's Liege-Bastogne-Liege crash.
UAE Team Emirates confirmed Pogachar's fractures of the left navicular and lunate bones. Pogachar is scheduled to undergo surgery to treat the fracture of the left navicular bone.
"Taddei suffered fractures of the left navicular and lunate bones. The navicular bone requires surgery and he will undergo surgery this afternoon with a hand surgeon here in Genk," Dr. Adrian Rotunno, medical director of UAE Team Emirates, confirmed.
UAE Team Emirates has not confirmed when Pogachal will recover or when he will be well enough to return to training and competition.
Pogachar was the favorite to win Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and after winning the Amstel Gold Race and Flèche Wallonne, he was looking for a triple Ardennes Classic victory.
However, he was involved in a crash with Mikel Honoré (EF Education-Easy Post) on the downhill about 85 km into the 258 km race and abandoned Liege-Bastogne-Liege. He was forced to board the team's support car and was later taken to the hospital for treatment.
