Tadej Pogaczal underwent successful surgery on Sunday at a Genk hospital for a fractured navicular bone in his left wrist, and UAE Team Emirates has confirmed that the Slovenian will return home on Monday to continue his recovery.
"Tadej Pogaczal's surgery on the navicular bone was successful and he will return home tomorrow for recovery and rehabilitation," UAE Team Emirates medical director Dr. Adrian Rotunno confirmed.
Pogachar suffered a broken wrist in the Liege-Bastogne-Liege crash and was immediately taken to the hospital for surgery. In a medical update, Pogachar's team confirmed that Pogachar had suffered two fractures to his left navicular and lunate bones.
However, only the navicular fracture required surgery, which was performed by a hand surgeon from Genk.
UAE Team Emirates has not confirmed when Pogachal will recover or when he will be able to return to training and matches.
Pogachar was the overwhelming favorite to win Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and after winning the Amstel Gold Race and Flèche Wallonne, he was looking for a triple Ardennes Classic victory.
However, he was involved in a crash with Mikel Honoré (EF Education-Easy Post) on the downhill about 85 km into the 258 km race and abandoned the Liege-Bastogne-Liege race.
He was forced to board the team's support car and was later taken to the hospital for treatment.
UAE Team Emirates later confirmed Pogachal's injury and treatment.
Team manager Mauro Gianetti remained cautious about Pogachal's recovery and how his injury would affect the upcoming season. Pogachar's next goal after a rest period is to win the Tour de France in July, and Gianetti hopes his rider will recover quickly.
"We can't say anything yet. Perhaps we will have more information after the surgery and we will see how it goes. It will be a more complicated surgery because multiple bones will be fixed. So we are praying that everything will go well and he will recover very quickly."
