Tadej Pogačar has decided to compete in the Amstel Gold Race on Sunday, and the Slovenian is also expected to compete in the Flèche Wallonne before finishing his spring classic campaign in Liège-Bastogne-Liège.
Pogachar abandoned the Amstel Gold Race in 2019 after competing only once before as a neo-pro, but he lines up as the clear winner in Maastricht four years later.
The UAE Team Emirates rider has already won this spring's Tour of Flanders with a remarkable solo performance. He won Paris-Nice and the Vuelta a Andalucía, his tenth win of the season.
"I've already had a very successful spring, but I want to get a big result in the Ardennes Classics starting in Amstel," Pogachar said.
"I've only run this race once, but I know it's a long, hard course with lots of climbing.
Pogachar will be joined on Sunday by UAE Team Emirates with Joerd Backes, Ryan Gibbons, Felix Großschartner, Marc Hirschi, Rui Oliveira, and Matteo Tolentin in good form.
Despite rumors circulated by Patrick Lefebvre's fake social networking account, Remco Evenpole will not be Pogachar's rival in the Amstel Gold Race.
Soudal-QuickStep confirmed that Evenpoel will focus on preparing for the Giro d'Italia and will compete in the only one-day this spring to defend his Liege-Bastogne-Liege title on April 23.
La Doyenne will be the first meeting of the season between Pogachar and Evenpoel, and perhaps their only matchup outside of the World Championships in August.
Pogachar won the 2021 Liège-Bastogne-Liège race, but was forced to sit out last year's race, which Evenpoel won handily.
