Lizzie Dayignan, who has been away from racing since the birth of her second child, could return to the peloton as early as April 19 in La Flèche Wallonne and April 23 in Liège-Bastogne-Liège with Trek-Segafredo.
"Lizzie Deignan (Trek-Segafredo), who has returned to competition after the birth of her second child, completes the field of champions," organizer ASO announced Thursday of Deignan's participation in the Flèche Wallonne.
However, Trek-Segafredo told Cycling News that Deignan's early return in the Ardennes Classique is still undecided. The team is asking her to be ready for the start of Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège in case she is needed, as some riders may not be able to compete now.
Deignan had originally expected to return to competition at La Vuelta Femenina in Spain from May 1-7, but is scheduled to race 13 days earlier than expected in the final two races of the Ardennes Classics.
Deignan won the 2020 Liège-Bastogne-Liège race and has finished on the second podium at the Flèche Wallonne Femme twice before, in 2014 and 2017.
Trek-Segafredo has yet to announce all three Ardennes Classics, which begin Sunday with the Amstel Gold Race Ladies Edition, and ASO has not announced the winners of Deignan, Elisa Longo Borghini, and this year's Trofeo Alfredo Binda winner Shirin van Anlooy, the winner of this year's Trofeo Alfredo Binda, are listed in Flèche Wallonne.
Longo Borghini finished third in the Flèche Wallonne Femme in 2014 and 2021. After recovering from COVID-19 earlier this season, Longo Borghini will once again be in contention for a podium finish.
Deignan, who gave birth to her first child in 2018, made a successful comeback to professional cycling at the Ardennes Classics in April 2019.
Rather than returning during the Classic season as she did in 2019, she anticipated starting with the seven-day La Vuelta Femenina, which moved from the traditional September to May on the calendar.
The original plan was to experience seven days of racing at the beginning of her comeback, which could include the last two Ardennes, depending on the availability of Trek Segafredo's roster and athletes.
Deignan's plans also include the Tour de France Femme in July and the UCI World Championships in Glasgow in August.
