Christophe Laporte has turned down a high offer from a rival team to stay with Jumbo Visma.
The news was first reported by the Dutch website Wielerflits and confirmed to Cycling News by another source on Friday.
Laporte has signed a three-year contract until the end of 2026, the same length of Wout Van Aert's contract with the Dutch team. Jumbo will continue to be the team's title sponsor after 2024, while director Richard Plagge continues to build the team for the long term.
The 30-year-old Laporte joined Jumbo Visma in 2022 after eight years with Cofidis and quickly rose to the next level, winning stages in Paris-Nice and the Tour de France and finishing second in the E3 Saxo Classic and World Championships.
This year he stepped it up a notch, winning Ghent-Wevelgem with Van Aert and a few days later winning the Doire de Flanderen.
He finished 14th in the Tour de Flanders as Van Aert's substitute, but suffered a puncture in Paris-Roubaix.
According to Cycling News, he was approached by many teams and had multiple offers on the table.
Suggestions that Laporte turned down "mega-offers" are probably exaggerated, as Jumbo Visma fought to keep him and increased his salary to match his value, but it is nevertheless clear that he could have earned more elsewhere.
Laporte is happy with the way Jumbo Bisma has blossomed to his potential, as well as his current role as shadow leader behind van Aert amongst big names like Dylan van Baar and Thijsje Benoot.
The prospect of single-handedly leading the French team, even with the increased rewards, would put pressure on the quiet 30-year-old.
AG2R Citroën was one of the teams that approached Laporte with a budget and a potentially huge hole in the Classics lineup. Greg Van Avermaat is considering retirement, while Oliver Naessen and Benoit Kosnefrois' contracts expire at the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Total Energy has some money to spare after firing Peter Sagan, who is retiring.
Jambovisma refused to confirm Laporte's contract extension when contacted by Cycling News, but an announcement of Laporte's new contract is expected later in the season.
Laporte, along with Van Aert and team leader Jonas Vingegaard, is expected to compete in the Tour de France again this summer.
