Dylan van Baar's broken shoulder tops Paris-Roubaix injury list

Reigning champion Dylan van Baar crashed on the five-star Trouet d'Arenberg course in Paris-Roubaix on Sunday, moving to the top of the injury list.

The Dutch rider, who won the race solo last year, was one of many in a string of crashes in the race's most famous sector. Van Baar suffered "cranial trauma" and "forehead wounds," according to the race's official injury report.

However, after an examination at a hospital in Valenciennes, van Baar was also diagnosed with a broken hand and a fractured shoulder, which would keep him out of the field for some time.

Peter Sagan, in his last Paris-Roubaix before retiring from road racing at the end of the season, was involved in a group crash in the second sector of the cobbled road from Veasley to Kievy and had to abandon the race.

After a roadside assessment, the 2018 winner left the race with concussion and also sustained some injuries as a result of the crash.

Piers Alegato of Cofidis also suffered a head injury in the same crash and was registered under cycling's concussion protocol.

Guillaume Van Kersbulck (Vingor WB) also hit his head and was listed on the race's injury list as having "disruptive head trauma," while Sebastien Grignard (Lot Doustony) also suffered a head injury in addition to a bruised left shoulder.

Filippo Colombo (Q36.5) suffered a dislocated left shoulder, as did Dushan Rajovic (left knee injury) and Matej Mohoric (forearm injury) of the Bahrain Victorious team.

Their teammate Fred Wright was involved in the most dramatic crash of the day, when his front tire came off the rim and he crashed hard on the Trouet d'Arenberg. Several riders then crashed one after another, including Van Baar, Mohoric, and Kasper Asgreen (Sourdal-Quick-Step).

Wright's condition has not yet been confirmed by the team, but the Bahraini co-leader was taken to a local hospital after abandoning the race in the famous forest.

The official list of injuries gives a glimpse of what happened during the five-and-a-half-hour race: the 2023 Paris-Roubaix was also a brutal race, with the race's leader, who was also injured in the crash, being taken to a local hospital.
