Egan Bernal has resumed training after his crash at the Volta a Catalunya in preparation for next week's race in Spain at Iturria Basque.
The Colombian had been waiting since the Vuelta a San Juan to return to racing in Catalunya last week after abandoning a race in Argentina earlier in the season due to knee pain.
However, on the final day of the Volta, Bernal was involved in a mid-stage crash. As a result, he was forced to abandon the race, but escaped with broken bones and only cuts and scrapes.
After the crash, Bernal got back on his bike on Tuesday and Wednesday and rode the hilly 101-km course around Monaco twice with Ineos Grenadiers teammate Brandon Rivera.
The two are on the provisional start list for Iturria Basque (April 3-8) along with reigning champion Dani Martinez, Jonathan Castroviejo, Omar Freire, Ethan Hayter, and Carlos Rodriguez.
Earlier this week, they tackled the famous training climb, the Col de la Madon, and La Turbie, one of the climbs in the time trial for the final stage of next year's Tour de France. These two four-hour rides should help them prepare for next week's six days in the tough hills of the Basque Country.
Bernal's season schedule beyond next week has not yet been confirmed by him or his Ineos team, but as he continues on the road to recovery from a career-threatening training accident in January 2022, even if he is not yet ready to lead, British team's Tour de France team, he is expected to be able to contribute.
"If Egan is fit enough, there is no reason not to bring him to the Tour for his experience and contribution to the team," Ineos deputy team principal Rod Ellingworth recently told Cycling News. The door is completely open and the Tour is still five months away."
Martinez, along with young Spaniard Rodriguez, is a candidate to lead Ineos in the Tour de France this July.
Colombian Martinez will be joined next week by 2022 Tour champion Jonas Vingegaard (Jumbo-Visma), Richard Kalapas (EF Education-EasyPost), and the UAE Team Emirates and Jayco Alura respectively. The Yates twins Adam and Simon, who will defend their Ituria Basque title against the Yates twins Adam and Simon.
