Models affected include: the Open UP Ekar, UPPER Ekar, WIDE Ekar, and MIND Ekar, as well as all Open framesets that use Campagnolo hydraulic rear brake hoses. The framesets in question were sold in matte black, blue-ish, gray-ish, orange-ish, or custom colors. The model name of the frame is listed on the top tube near the seat tube.
Open Campagnolo hydraulic brake hoses, due to their construction, are more susceptible to damage than other brake hoses. Therefore, they can be damaged by a multi-stop, for example, when the handlebars are tipped to the left. This could mean that the rear brakes fail, leading to a crash.
Open has finished redesigning the new Mulitstop for Campagnolo hydraulic brake hoses, and the new units have already been shipped to warehouses in Europe and the US. According to Open, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall and retailers will be able to replace affected Mulitstops and hoses within a few weeks of consumers initiating a repair request.
Open will offer eligible users a free repair at their local Open retailer to install the latest Multistop and a new Campagnolo rear brake hose. Open advises customers not to perform the repair themselves, but to bring the bike to an Open dealer.
Open founders Gerald Vroomen and Andy Kessler said, "We apologize for the inconvenience, but customer safety is our top priority," and Open added, "We are implementing this recall to protect customer safety and prevent injuries.
If you do not have the original receipt, repairs can still be made and you can contact Open or submit a recall form through Open's website.
This comes just one day after Shimano announced the suspension and recall of the alloy stem Pro Vibe.
Cycling News has reached out to Campagnolo for comment on the durability of the brake hoses. We will update this article as soon as we receive additional information.
