Tour of Flanders Injury List: Wellens, Turner with broken bones, Gil May with concussion

Sunday's Tour de Flanders saw a number of crashes and an equally lengthy medical update by teams and riders. Many riders escaped with minor injuries, but others did not, including Tim Wellens and Ben Turner with broken bones.

UAE Team Emirates confirmed that Wellens broke his left collarbone after falling in a big crash caused by Philippe Macejuk (Bahrain Victorious) and will undergo surgery. [The clavicle is broken in four pieces. It hurts a lot, but should be much better in a few days," Wellens commented on Twitter (opens in new tab) early Monday, thanking people who sent him messages and hospital officials at Oudenaarde & Herental.

Ineos Grenadiers also confirmed on social media that Turner had suffered a radius fracture in his left arm after being involved in a major collision, according to imaging results at a local hospital.

Many other riders from various teams were also involved, with Beulah Hansgrohe clearly visible among the first to go down. However, this was just one of many crashes that took their toll over the course of the day.

"It was a tough day for us. I'm not going to complain, but after 150 km we had three people in the hospital. We wanted to take an aggressive approach, but after the crash we had no choice. The team was led by Danny van Poppel, Marco Haller, and Shane Archibald, all with bruises and Haller with a cut on his knee, according to a medical update (open in new tab).Total Energies also had a cut on his knee.Peter Sagan, who was injured in the crash, was also injured in the race, Dries Van Gestel, Thomas Bonnet, and Sandy Dujardin, among others, who suffered bruises.

Intermarche Circus Wanty announced that a number of players were involved in severe falls, with Aimée de Ghent heading for surgery with a broken left elbow and Taco van der Hoorn leaving the hospital with a concussion and a cut above his right eye.

"After examination, Vini suffered a concussion but no fracture. He is staying in the hospital overnight for observation," the team said in a statement on Twitter (opens in new tab). Bahrain Victorious rider Matej Mohoric was also involved in a crash with Gil May and left the race, but reported no serious injuries on social media. 'It was a terrible day. After today's crash I am fine. I hope others are too," Mohoric wrote on Instagram (opens in new tab).
