Matej Mohoric to use dropper seatpost again for Milan-Sanremo

Matej Mohoric will also be using a dropper seatpost in Milan-San Remo, hoping to drop his rivals on the winding descent of Poggio, just as he did in 2022.

Last year, the Bahrain Victorious rider warned his friends in the peloton not to try to follow him on the descent, as the dropper post lowered his saddle height and center of gravity, helping him dive and clear the twisting slope alone.

Mohoric took big risks on several corners, going off the road and hitting low walls, but managed to widen the gap on the winding descent. Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates) did not chase Mohoric and slowed his pace. Meanwhile, Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) and Mathieu Van Der Pol (Alpecin Phoenix) were unable to close the gap.

Mohoric opened up enough distance on the descent of Poggio to escape to the finish line on Via Roma. Mohoric later said he found his winning advantage at the dropper post and "destroyed cycling."

At the start of Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, one of Mohoric's Bahrain Victorious mechanics told Cycling News that the Slovenian would use "almost the same setup" as last year. Mohoric himself, however, replied, "We'll see when we get to Milan."

Bahrain Victorious admitted to Cycling News that the Slovenians will again use dropper posts. He also used a dropper post at Strade Bianche, but had to change bikes due to mechanical problems.

Mahoric spoke to Slovenian media about winning Milan-San Remo in 2022.

"I know it will be very difficult to win again, but I have a good card to play and I honestly think I have a chance to win again. Various riders, including Tadei Pogachar, could win the championship.

Mohoric, along with the Bahrain Victorias team and bike sponsor Merida, worked out a dropper post plan in training to take advantage of Poggio's technology. Common in the mountain bike scene, dropper seatposts can be quickly raised and lowered with a cable-operated remote control attached to the handlebars.

The dropper post was chosen because the Merida Scultura used a traditional round seatpost.

Other teams and riders have also researched the idea of using dropper posts, but the process is much more complicated because Ineos Grenadiers and their bike sponsor Pinarello use aero seatposts.
