Marianne Vos will compete in Jumbo-Visma's first road race of the season on Sunday at the Trofeo Alfredo Binda - Comune di Cittiglio. She ended her cyclocross campaign just before this winter's World Championships due to health issues.
The eight-time cyclocross and former world champion on the road has not worn a number since finishing outside the top 10 in a World Cup cross race in January and 10th in the Dutch championships. Her last road appearance was at the UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong last September. [The Trofeo Alfredo Binda is her favorite race. 'The first race of the season always makes me nervous. I'm looking forward to starting the race with my team."
In mid-February, Voss underwent treatment for a pelvic artery stenosis; in 2020, a nodule in her inguinal artery ended her cyclocross season early, but successful surgery allowed her to compete the full 2021 road season.
"The treatment went well and, as expected, I was able to get back on the bike and resume training 10 days later. My first road race is just around the corner," Vos said recently from training in Tenerife.
Following the Trofeo Alfredo Binda, which he won four times between 2009 and 2019, Vos was scheduled to continue his road season in Belgium with the March 29 Dwars Doer Fraunderen and April 4 Tour of Flanders.
"Of course, there are some great races later in the year, but for now the focus is on the spring races. I'm looking forward to some exciting racing," said the 35-year-old, who earlier this year extended his contract with Jumbo Visma and will remain with the team until the end of 2025.
Voss will be joined by Jumbo-Visma teammates Ryane Marx, Colin Labecchi, Carlin Swinkels, Amber Clark, and Kim Kassow for the Italian Women's World Tour One-Day competition on Sunday.
Vos did not compete in the Italian semi-classic last year, finishing second when she last competed in 2021 and winning the Tour de Flanders a week later.
The Trofeo Alfredo Binda is one of the longest running events on the women's calendar, having started in 1974. This year's race will run 139 km from the shores of Lake Maggiore in Maccagno to Porto Valtravaglia, where it will make a U-turn and return to Gelminiaga. The race will consist of four laps of an 18 km finishing circuit, including a climb up Casalzigno and a climb up to Orino, before reaching the finish line in Cittiglio.
