Tour de France Wild Card Limit Gives New Life to Relegation Battle

A new rule was introduced that limited wildcard invitations to Grand Tours like the Tour de France to the top 50 teams in the UCI world ranking.

This season marked the first year that a team was demoted from the WorldTour if it fell outside the top 18 in the three-year team ranking. Lot Doustny and Israel Premier Tech were forcibly demoted to the Pro Team, while Alpecin Duseunink and Arkea Samsic were promoted to the World Tour.

In 2024, Grand Tour organizers will only be able to choose from the top 50 teams; in 2025, the top 40 teams, and finally the top 30 in 2026.

The Grand Tour is required to invite all WorldTour teams and the top two professional teams in the world ranking from the previous year. These teams were Lotto Doustony and Total Energy, while Israel Premier Tech was invited as a wildcard to all three Grand Tours. under UCI rules, Grand Tour organizers are not required to invite relegated teams, but other WorldTour stage races are relegated teams in the year following their relegation.

This new rule will prevent races like the Vuelta a EspaƱa from favoring lower-ranked national teams. Burgos-BH is ranked 62nd in the 2022 standings and earned the wildcard over other top-ranked teams like Uno-X. Caja Rural Seguros RGA is 32nd and also earned an invitation to the Spanish Grand Tour.

The new rules also apply to teams with new professional team licenses. The new team ranking will be calculated on the points earned by the 20 best riders. This is in contrast to the points calculation for existing teams, where points are calculated based on riders who were on the team in the previous season. Riders' points are not carried over to the new team.

The rules do not appear to take into account double counting of riders moving from an existing world team or pro team to a new pro team.

Under the new rules, all points will count for all teams aiming for the Grand Tour, not just those aiming for the World Tour in the next three-year cycle.
