Primoš Roglic, still unshaven on his legs, enjoyed his return to the peloton at Tirreno-Adriatico after almost six months and showed some form on the opening stage along the Tuscan coast.
The Jumbo-Visma rider has not raced since last October, when he underwent bone graft surgery to stabilize his left shoulder after crashing at last year's Vuelta a España.
Roglic has set his sights on this year's Giro d'Italia, but only began training outdoors in early December after a two-month break. He had planned to start the season at the end of the month at the Volta a Catalunya before the Giro d'Italia, but after a solid high altitude training session, he added the Tirreno Adriatico to his calendar.
"I'm happy to be back," Roglic said Tuesday.
"After the high altitude training camp, I felt ready to race again. I trained big and I'm ready to start racing. After this race, I'll know what I need to improve on to get better."
Roglic finished 12th in Monday's rain-soaked opening time trial and stayed in front on the second stage to Follonica as the sprint teams fought for position, finishing in the peloton
Roglic conceded 49 seconds to Filippo Ganna in the 11.5km time trial, but was one second slower than teammate Wilco Kelderman.
Roglic won the 2019 Tirreno-Adriatico, but this year he has much different ambitions to make one peak in May for the Giro d'Italia.
"I don't want any pressure from a GC perspective. That's not the main goal here," Roglic insisted.
"The goal is to get back in the race and back to the peloton. To be able to ride with the best riders. We want to do our best as a team."
