GP Ottingen cancelled due to heavy snow

Heavy snowfall in Northern Europe forced the cancellation of the GP Oettingen in Belgium on Wednesday. Organizers waited until the last minute, a few hours before the scheduled start time, before deciding to cancel the event.

The course of the Belgian women's one-day race, held west of Brussels, was heavily affected by the overnight snowfall.

Eight Women's WorldTour teams were scheduled to participate in the 1.1 category race: Team DSM, Jumbo Visma, Human Powered Health, Movistar, Jayco Aroura, Uno X, UAE Team ADQ, and Phoenix Desseuninck.

This year's event will be the third, as Elisa Balsamo won the inaugural event in 2021, her final year with Valcar Travel & Services, and Lorena Vives (Team DSM) won last year.

On Wednesday, the second stage of the Trofeo Ponente in Rosa was cancelled, as was the first stage, due to a dispute with local authorities over route security.

On the men's calendar, Paris-Nice and Tirreno-Adriatico were held as usual this week.

This is not the first time this season that snow has interrupted a race, with the recent Grand Camino stage being called off with 20km to go due to a snowstorm.

The women's peloton heads to the Ronde van Drenthe in the Netherlands this weekend.
