Cavalli to stay away from racing due to injuries sustained in 2022 crash

FDJ-SUEZ announced that Marta Cavalli will not be competing in the Strade Bianche and will take a period of time away from racing to continue her long-term recovery from the serious injuries she sustained in a major crash at the Tour de France Femme last July.

The team has not confirmed when Cavalli will return to the peloton, but said he will continue training with the team's performance director during his time away from racing.

"In view of Marta Cavalli's early season racing, the FDJ-SUEZ team management, in agreement with the cyclists, has decided to remove her from the start list for the Strade Bianche scheduled for March 4, 2023," a FDJ-SUEZ A statement was released.

"Despite resuming high-intensity training and participating in early season camps, Marta Cavalli wants to give herself time to fully recover from the physical effects of the accident on stage 2 of the Tour de France Femme 2022.

"Marta will observe a period of non-racing and continue her high-intensity training, accompanied by the team's performance director, Flavien Soenen.

Cavalli was involved in a crash on the second stage to Provins at the Tour de France Fam last July, suffering head and lower body trauma and forced to abandon the race.

After a long recovery, he returned to racing last October at the Giro de Emilia, Tre Valli Varesine, and Tour de Romandie, saying he was 100% recovered from the accident. However, she also said that she has not yet reached the best form that won her the Amstel Gold Race and Flèche Wallonne earlier in the spring.

She joined the FDJ-SUEZ team at their pre-season training camp and competed in the UAE Tour Women's race.

However, during the four-day race, Cavalli was caught in a crosswind and echelon on stage 2 and finished at the top of the decisive Jebel Hafeet on stage 3, dropping out of GC contention.

At the time, she exhibited lingering discomfort while riding in the peloton, which the team speculated was due to the after-effects of a crash she had experienced in the Tour de France femme.

"Marta is not healed. We will finish this race and take the time we need to help her," FDJ-Suez team manager Stephane Delcourt said at the UAE Tour de France Women.

Cavalli competed in Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, the start of the spring classics, but did not finish.

FDJ-Suez reiterated that the team was focused on Cavalli's recovery and support during this time.

"FDJ-SUEZ General Manager Stéphane Delcourt and his staff wish to do everything possible to ensure that Malta can race at the highest level of performance as it did in 2022," said a team statement.
