In his second sprint win in two weeks, Caleb Yuan (Lotto Destony) narrowly missed out on victory after the commissaires reviewed images of the photo finish at Sunday's Grand Prix of Monserre.
Yuan and Gerben Theisen (Intermarque Wantigover) jumped to the finish line at the same time in the group sprint for Roselare, and initially it appeared that the Lotto Destony rider was declared the winner. In fact, Ewan was interviewed behind the podium about his "victory" before the jury corrected the finishing order and Thyssen was declared first.
It was a case of deja vu for Ewan, who had to wait endlessly on the first day of the UAE Tour before the commissaires gave their decision to Tim Merlier (Sudar-Quick Step).
The difference was the same here, and Ewan's frustration was compounded by a photo finish that was unclear and a finish line that did not appear perfectly straight.
On Sunday evening, Ewan posted an image on social media suggesting that he may have passed Thyssen.
"I think I kinda won. What do you think? Ewan wrote as a caption for the first picture and added a second one. I'd honestly feel a little better if someone Big G had a picture of me that clearly beat me."
[12Sam Welsford (DSM), who finished third in the sprint, was adamant that his compatriot had won the day, writing: "Wtf, your win is obvious."
Ewan's teammates Thomas de Gendt and RĂ¼diger Selig also questioned the verdict on social media.
Speaking to Sporza immediately after the results were revised, Ewan tried to find humor in the situation. 'This seems to be the theme of the year,' he said. If only my arms were a little longer or if I could sprint a little faster ......" Ewan said.
"I'm disappointed, but it is what it is. I'm in good shape and I can take the positives."
Next up for the Australian is Milan-San Remo, where he finished second in 2018 and 2021.
"That race, as you know, is not just a sprint. You have to overcome hills as well," Ewan said.
Thyssen, meanwhile, was waiting behind the podium in Rosellare and could not hide his pleasant surprise when he learned of GP Monsere's victory.
"I knew I was second; I knew I was second. Some people told me that it was officially announced that I was second. It's great to beat a champion like that."
