While most World Tour teams again opted for conservative kit designs for 2023, British Continental team Trinity Racing threw caution to the wind with a "disruptive" eye-popping design by Specialized.
The black and white checkered pattern, framed in pink and green, gives a three-dimensional effect reminiscent of Q*bert-like optical illusions and video games.
The first time the peloton saw such a radical kit was when EF Education partnered with Palace Skateboards to create a special design for the 2020 Giro d'Italia. 5]
Specialized said of the Trinity design, "The boundaries between disciplines riders that blur the lines between disciplines" by "disrupting what it means to be a race team," suggesting that it reflects the team's multi-discipline focus and stating that "our design team was inspired to create a kit that reflects this energy and passion."
.
Cycling News created a definitive ranking of team kits for the 2023 World Tour.
The Trinity Racing team includes mountain bike racers Alex Malacarne, Adrian Bochis, Camilo Gomez, Chiara Teocchi, and British cyclocross champion Cameron Mason, plus a 16-rider men's road development team included.
The road team includes Joe Pidcock, brother of Ineos' Tom Pidcock, and US criterium champion Luke Lamperti.
Designer Kayla Clarotto, Specialized's brand concept leader, explained how the concept of finding calm amidst chaos is reflected in the pattern.
"We wanted to give the illusion of chaos through textures, layers, and loud colors.
"We are combining the idea of the 'butterfly effect' with the seemingly chaotic nature of something full of intention and pattern."
Thomas Perren, Specialized's apparel design lead, said the kit's design "represents going into game mode," a mode of play, pause, calm and chaos.
"There are moments in a race when you need to relax and calculate, and moments when you need to press 'go' and take risks or lose chances. More importantly, you have to enjoy the bike and give it your all as a team. Just like in a game, there is usually a charismatic person with an interesting backstory, theme, or goal"
.
The team's S-Works Tarmac SL7 and S-Works Epic are more subdued, except for the bright pink seatpost that offsets the blue pattern on the frame.
