RCS Sports takes over the organization of the Giro d'Italia Donne and Under-23 Giro

RCS Sport has been selected to organize the Giro d'Italia Giovani Under 23, starting in 2023, and the Giro d'Italia Donne, starting in 2024, as a result of a carefully crafted bidding process developed by the Italian Cycling Federation, in which RCS Sport was the sole candidate Giro d'Italia Donne, which will begin in 2024.

FCI confirmed that RCS Sport will organize the Giro d'Italia Giovani Under 23 for five years from 2023 to 2027 and the Giro d'Italia Donne for four years from 2024 to 2027.

FCI explained that the bidding process ended on February 1 with only one applicant; details of RCS Sport's bid and plans for the two Italian stage races will be revealed at a specific press conference.

FCI President Cordiano D'Agnoni said, "We are very pleased to entrust the organization to an entity that has proven organizational capabilities and is able to launch a competition that meets the needs of the Movement.

"Big events like the Giro U23 and the Giro Donne are fundamental not only from a technical sporting point of view, but also for the municipalities involved, who benefit from the economic and promotional aspects."

RCS Sport already organizes the men's Giro d'Italia, Strade Bianche, Tirreno-Adriatico, Milano-Sanremo, Il Lombardia, and many other smaller races, almost exclusively in Italy.

The Giro d'Italia Donne is now organized by PMG Sport/Starlight, which took over the women's stage race from longtime organizer Giuseppe Rivolta in 2021 and 2022.

The two major races, the Giro d'Italia Donne and the Tour de France Femme, are held in July before the first UCI Cycling World Championships in Glasgow. The Giro Donne will be held from June 30 to July 9, still during the Tour de France men's race, and the Tour de France Femme will be held July 23-30, after the men's race.

There are complaints that the lack of information about the route prevents teams from planning against their major goals for the season.

"I can confirm that the organization is PMG Sport/Starlight," a PMG Sport/Starlight representative told Cycling News about the 2023 event.

PMG Sport/Starlight has not announced the route for this year's Giro d'Italia Donne, but confirmed to Cycling News that it will end in Sardinia and that the organization is discussing a departure from Rome.

The UCI has downgraded this 10-day event to a pro series in 2021. This was due to the previous organizer's failure to provide live coverage of the race, a requirement to be part of the Women's World Tour in 2020, and other organizational issues.

At the time, the 2020 race was known as the Giro d'Italia Feminile or Giro Rosa and was held in September as part of the late-season calendar revision by COVID-19.

Under the improved management of PMG Sports/Starlight, the race returned to the Women's World Tour in 2022.

One of the oldest races on the women's calendar, and the only one that offers 10 days of racing over iconic passes such as Stelvio, Zoncolan, Gavia, and Mortirolo, it will celebrate its 34th anniversary in 2023.

Recent winners include defending champion Annemieke van Fluten, who won the title in 2018, 2019, and 2022, and now retired Anna van der Breggen, who won in 2015, 2017, 2020, and 2021 They are the most recent winners. Other winners include Megan Guarnier, two-time Mara Abbott, and three-time Marianne Voss.

The Giro d'Italia Giovani Under 23, now in its 46th year, will be held from June 10 to 17, and is made up of Nuova Ciclistica Placci and Communication Clinic, which organized the race from 2018 to 2022 RCS Sport will take over the management of the event from the Extragiro Group.

The event has served as a place for young riders between the ages of 19 and 22 to show their strength among their peers and for team managers to scout for up-and-coming talent to develop on the World Tour.

Leo Hayter won last year's overall title in the Hagens Berman Axiom race and joined Ineos Grenadiers as a trainee in August, subsequently signing a contract through 2025.

Winners of the last five Giro d'Italia Giovani Under-23s who have made the elite ranks include Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates), Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers), Andres Camilo Ardila (now Burgos-BH), Alexandre Vlasov (Bora-Hansgrohe), and Pavel Sivakov (Ineos Grenadiers).

The under-23 race began in 1970 and was discontinued in 1987, 2005, 2007-2008, and 2013-2016.

The Giro d'Italia Donne and Giro d'Italia Giovani Under 23 are under the umbrella of RCS Sport and include the Giro d'Italia, two monuments Milan-San Remo and Il Lombardia, and the World Tour race Tirreno-Adriatico, including the Strade Bianche.
