The Athens Orthopaedic Clinic Twilight, one of the longest-running and most popular criterium events in the United States, has been added as the tenth round of the 2023 American Criterium Cup. For the second year, the series has chosen a race in Athens, Georgia, for its season opener on Saturday, April 22.
Now in its 43rd year, the Athens Twilight is also the opening race of Speed Week, a series of seven criteriums held over nine days in the southeastern United States.
"This is a bedrock race for athletes, and this race highlights the deep history of criterium racing in the South. The level of competition, the crowd excitement, and the venue never disappoints," ACC Administrator Peter Disco said of the Athens Twilight.
The American Criterium Cup offers $100,000 in total prize money for the men's and women's annual points competition. Teams and riders will receive an additional $400,000 in prize money and individual race support. The ACC is considering revising its points system for 2023 to make it less likely that one rider will dominate both the overall and sprint events.
Last year's Speedweeks earned a combined $95,000 for professional men and women over the course of seven races. Organizers plan to offer the same amount in prize money this season.
The stage races, which kick off the USA Cycling calendar, will be held February 17-19 in the sun-drenched southeastern United States. With Super Bowl LVII and the PGA Tour on the horizon, top amateur and professional cyclists from across North America will converge on Phoenix, Arizona for the 31st annual John Early Memorial Valley of the Sun Stage Race.
The Landis Cyclery Trek time trial kicks off on Friday, followed by the road race on Saturday and the criterium on Sunday. The Valley of the Sun stage race will serve as the state's largest USAC junior development road race series.
The three-day event is one of the best training camps for teams in the country and provides a way for teams to identify talent and get them into early season racing.
Three UCI Continental women's teams will be on the starting line this year: the Blue Ridge TWENTY24 from Virginia, DNA Pro Cycling, and Roxo Racing. Among the men's professionals, Project Echelon Racing and L39LION of Los Angeles lead the pack at the continental level.
