UK-based Hope has introduced its newest hubset, the Pro 5, the successor to the popular Pro 4 hub. This hubset further enhances its strengths by offering the right blend of pickup speed, load capacity, durability, and aerodynamic drag.
Hope, headquartered in Barnoldswick, England, has been manufacturing high-quality bicycle components and parts for decades, but it was the development of the radical Hope HB.T track bike for Team GB athletes in collaboration with Lotus before the Tokyo Olympics that attention.
Its hubs are favored by riders from a variety of disciplines for their high-quality construction, long-lasting performance, and a variety of distinctive anodized colors.
The Pro 4 hub has long been a favorite of riders. Hope claims to want to build on this existing platform and concentrate on reducing drag in the drive mechanism. This was made possible by the use of a zero-drag labyrinth freehub seal and an improved ratchet and pawl system with a new spring. According to Hope, these two things have reduced drag while at the same time improving durability and load capacity compared to the Pro 4.
The Pro 5 hub uses a 54-tooth ratchet ring compared to the Pro 4's 44 teeth. The engagement points (the number of points that the ratchet mechanism in the rear hub engages in one cassette revolution) have also been significantly increased from 44 to 108. This is made possible by the new 6-pawl freehub design (2 pawls increased from 4 pro), which always has 3 pawls engaged.
The hub shell itself also uses larger bearings to improve durability. Durability is important to Hope, and according to the brand, the Pro 5 has been tested to function in the worst conditions. The hubs are fully serviceable and can be rebuilt with simple tools. In addition, the freehubs and endcaps can be easily replaced without tools, so one hub can accommodate a variety of drivetrain standards and, in Hope's words, protect your wheelset for years to come.
The Pro 5 adds a center-lock disc fitting option. There is also an e-bike specific version of the hub with a stainless steel freehub body to handle the increased stress and torque from the electronic motor.
The Pro 5 hub will feature wire-cut steel jaws for maximum strength, a new step-down axle design for a stiffer freehub, and a new hub body shape to reduce weight and maintain rigidity.
Pro 5 hubs are manufactured with 24-, 28-, 32-, and 36-hole drills and are available on all modern freehub bodies; 6-bolt or center-lock disc mount options are also available.
Hope has committed to producing spares for the Pro 5 for at least 10 years after production ends, and a new Pro 5 tool kit for mechanics with a bearing press to aid serviceability will also be available.
Hope Pro 5 hub sets will be available at retailers beginning March 1.
The hubs retail for 220 pounds for the rear hubs and 95 pounds for the front hubs; wheelsets with Pro 5 hubs will start at 310 pounds for the rear and 190 pounds for the front. For more information, see Hope's website.
