Canada's Michael van den Ham became the hidden hero of Sunday's cyclocross world championships in Vogelheide after television cameras caught him putting his finger back in place after a serious dislocation.

Mathieu van der Pol and Wout van Aert dominated the headlines after an intense battle, but Van den Ham was praised for his quick decision to put his finger back in place and his courage in finishing in 33rd place.

The Canadian was involved in a high-speed crash on the opening lap. Television footage of him getting up showed his right ring finger dislocated at a 45-degree angle. He must have been in pain, but van den Ham quickly put the finger back in place, got up, and continued running.

On Instagram after the run, Van den Ham described the dislocation as "the grossest 45-degree angle," but posted the video with the song "Snap Out Of It" by Arctic Monkeys.

"Sometimes you just have to get out of it. Except for this one incident, my race was very good ....... It was a disaster ...... But this is the race where I dislocated my finger and put it back together. After posting a montage of footage of the crash, the finger, and the finger back in place, he wrote on Instagram.

At the UCI Cyclocross World Championships in Hogelheide, Canadian sisters Isabella Holmgren and Eva Holmgren finished first and second in the junior women's race, giving Canada its first world cyclocross title.
