Newly demoted from the WorldTour, Israel Premier Tech is headed to the Giro d'Italia in addition to an invitation to the Tour de France.
The Israeli team, which has participated in the race every year since the historic Grande Partenza in Jerusalem in 2018, leads a four-man wildcard list for this May's race.
However, Lot-Dostny and Total Energy are absent. Both teams are eligible for automatic invitations to all three Grand Tours this year as the top two teams in the ProTeam ranking, but have declined to compete in the Giro.
The start in Abruzzo will feature three Italian professional teams in addition to Israel's Premier Tech and the current 18 WorldTour teams. Alberto Contador and Eolo Cometa, led by Ivan Basso, will compete for the third year in a row; Green Project-Baldiani-CSF-Feizane, which has only missed the 2009 event since the 1990s, will also be an invited competitor.
Team Collatec will be promoted to a professional team this season and is rumored to be in the running for Nairo Quintana.
All three Italian pro teams will race after Gianni Savio's Androni Giocattoli team morphed into the Colombian Continental team GW Shimano Seidelmec due to lack of sponsorship.
Aside from newcomer Collatec, Israel-Premiatec, Eolo-Cometa, and Green Project-Baldiani-CSF-Feizane have had success in the Giro. Israel-Premiatek has two stage wins (Alex Doucet of Vieste in 2020 and Dan Martin of Sega di Ara in 2021), and Martin also finished 10th two years ago.
Also in 2021, Lorenzo Fortunato scored a famous victory at Monte Zoncolan in Eolo Comenta. Meanwhile, the Bardiani team, led by the Reverberi brothers, has won 21 stages since Patrizio Gambilasio won the Borgo Valsgana in 1988. The most recent stage win was by Giulio Ciccone in Sestola in 2016.
The team lineup is, of course, yet to be finalized, but Italian sprint star Giacomo Nizzolo is likely to be part of Israel Premier Tech and will look to add to his one win in the race, which he won in 2021.
Eolo Cometa will use Fortunato and veteran Francesco Gavazzi, while newcomer Mattia Vice was the star of the breakaway in last year's race. Green Project Bardiani CSF Faizane has no big names, but Davide Gabbro and Alessandro Tonelli will be looking for a breakaway, while Corratec will be led by 2016 Vuelta a España stage winner Valerio Conti and former BikeExchange's Alexander Konychev.
The 2023 Giro d'Italia will open on May 6 in Fossa Sesia, with stages to Crans Montana, Monte Bondone, and Tre cime di Lavaredo and three time trials before heading to Rome on May 28.
In addition to announcing the four Giro wildcards, the RCS also announced the list of teams competing in the March races, Strade Bianche, Tirreno Adriatico, and Milan-San Remo.
Israel-Premier Tech, Green Project-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè, and Eolo-Kometa have been invited to all three races, while Corratec will only compete in Tirreno-Adriatico.
Lotto-Dostny and Total Energy will participate in the one-day race along with the new Swiss pro team Q36.5 and Tudor.
RCS said wildcard invitations to Strade Bianche Women, Milano-Torino, Giro di Sicilia, Gran Piemonte, and Il Lombardia will be announced later this year.
