Marcolini and Newsome to Lead New UCI Women's Team Roxo Racing

The U.S. has a new UCI team for the 2023 season, as Texas women's development team Roxo Racing has opted to seek Continental status with a view to joining the Women's World Tour in the future.

Emily Marcolini, a stage winner at the Redlands Classic and Tour of the Gila this season, is one of 10 riders coached by former Slipstream development team manager and former World Tour rider Chan McRae. Marcolini proved her talent as a climber by winning the "Gila Monster" mountain stage of the Tour of the Gila.

Gravel racer Emily Newsom also races for EF Education-TIBCO-SVB, winning the Gravel Locos in 2021 and chasing that elusive win next year in Unbound.

Former Canadian champion Ariane Bonhomme, 27, who races on the track and road, also joins the team with a major goal of a Canadian road championship title, along with representing Canada at the 2024 Olympics. Bonhomme said, "If I win the elite road race title, I will become the first Canadian female rider to win road race titles in the junior, U23, and elite categories.

Twenty-year-old Mexican Victoria Velasco will serve as both her country's track racing representative and Roxo's road racing representative in 2023. She will be joined by compatriot Romina Hinoisa, 19.

The team will consist of five Americans, Margie Bemis (21), Maegan Easler (25), Jacqueline Laroche (28), Jamie Rahmer (40), and Hayley Smith (28). Along with Newsom, Larmer and Smith are both based in Texas.

"Roxo Racing was formed with the intention of creating a Fort Worth-based women's professional cycling team from which to discover and empower the most talented women in the sport," explained Roxo Energy president J.W. Wilson in a press release. With the addition of directors Chan McRae and Scott Warren, we expect to see a lot of podiums next season."

McRae, Warren, Chris Watson, JW Wilson, and Todd Reed make up the team leadership.

Loxo Racing will target the U.S. schedule, competing in the new National Cycling League, criteriums, stage races like the Tour of the Gila and the Joe Martin Stage Race, gravel races and mountain bike endurance races. The plan is to compete in gravel races and mountain bike endurance races.
