Wout Van Aert Prefers Rainbow Band to Tour's Green Jersey in 2023

Wout Van Aert (Jumbo-Visma) has no intention of going after the green jersey from the start of the 2023 Tour de France in preparation for the world championship road race in Glasgow on August 6.

Van Aert, who completed a hat trick of points and stage wins at the 2022 Tour, said he will prioritize the rainbow jersey over the Maillot Vert next summer.

"The green was a great adventure, but a stage win is more memorable, and the world championships is a higher goal. So I'm not going to focus on the green points from the beginning," Van Aert told Sporza (opens in new tab) at the Jumbo Visma presentation in Amsterdam on Thursday.

"That could be a goal during the Tour, but I'm going to pick my days more [carefully]. There are still a lot of opportunities in the final week.

At the 2022 Tour, Van Aat dominated every course and officially won the points prize with half a week of racing left. The Belgian also wore the yellow jersey in the opening week and played a key role in Jonas Vingegaard's overall victory. He also made the decisive turn to drop Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) on the race's final mountain, Hautacam.

Van Aert admitted that he was out of gas for the entire 2022 season when he arrived in Wollongong for the World Championships in late September, and his race program for the new season has been adjusted accordingly.

The 28-year-old will compete in the Mol - Zilvermeercross on Friday and has his sights set on the cyclocross world championships in Hoogerheide in early February. However, he has announced that he will miss next month's Belgian championships due to training camp.

Juan Art also revealed that he will miss his title defense at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad and will start his season a week later at Strade Bianche.

"This way I will have an extra week to go to the high altitude training camp for Strade. High altitude training has proven in the past to be a formula for success," said Van Aert, who will return to Tirreno-Adriatico for the first time in a year before taking on Milan-San Remo.

Van Aert will once again compete in the E3 Saxo Bank Classic and Ghent-Wevelgem, which he won in 2022, before taking on the spring standouts, the Tour de Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. He was the overwhelming favorite to win last year's Ronde, but missed the race after contracting COVID-19.

"I want to win the Ronde or Roubaix. This is a high, but logical ambition. After what happened this year, my motivation is even higher," Van Aat said. He also made it clear that despite his podium finish in Liège-Bastogne-Liège in 2022, he will not extend his time to compete in Liège-Bastogne-Liège in the spring.

"It was a difficult decision not to go to Liège, but with the Tour and the World Championships coming up, I want to focus on the summer," he said.

Van Aert indicated that he would be racing the Tour de Suisse rather than the Dauphiné in preparation for the Tour, and that he would likely compete in the individual time trial at the Glasgow World Championships, which will be held after the road race.

On Thursday, Jumbo-Visma announced that Primoz Roglic will lead the team in the Giro d'Italia and Vingegaard will return to defend his title at the Tour.
