Physically 100%" - Marta Cavalli, fully recovered from her crash in the Tour de France Femmes

Marta Cavalli's remarkable run earlier this year came to an abrupt end with a horrific crash at the Tour de France Femmes Avec Zwift in July. Four months later, she has fully recovered and is looking forward to her second season with FDJ-SUEZ-Futuroscope.

"Everything is over now. After the first test it took me a long time to recover. I was able to return to racing without feeling pressure for results. Now I know that physically I am 100%. Now I just have to find the right conditions," Cavalli said in an interview with Bicisport (open in new tab).

Cavalli was involved in a crash in Provins on stage 2 of the Tour de France Femme and suffered head and lower body trauma, forcing him to abandon the race. After a long recovery, she returned to racing in October at the Giro de Emilia, Tre Valli Varesine, and Tour de Romandie, but she said she was not yet at her best form.

She recently signed a two-year contract extension to race with FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope until the end of 2024 and is focusing this winter on regaining her form in time for the spring classics.

"At the moment, I am thinking about the early season, especially the Classics. Honestly, the Classics are the most exciting races for me.

This season, Cavalli won two of the three Ardennes Classics, the Amstel Gold Race and the Flèche Wallonne, finishing fifth in Paris-Roubaix, sixth in Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and sixth last year in the Tour de Flanders.

With ASO adding the Paris-Roubaix fam in 2021 and the Tour de France fam in 2022 to its calendar, Cavalli hopes that organizer RCS Sport will add the monuments she dreams of winning, such as Milan - San Remo and Il Lombardia, in the future. She hopes to add a women's event.

"We often ask ourselves why the only two monuments in Italy where women's versions do not exist are Milan~Sanremo and Il Lombardia. We have started talking to those responsible about it, and soon we are convinced that it will be impossible to keep saying 'no,'" she said.

Cavalli's second place overall at the Giro d'Italia Donné was also a major step forward in her professional cycling career since joining FDJ-Suez-Futuroscope in 2021. She has committed to competing in both the Giro and the Tour this season, but said she has not yet set her sights on stage races next year.

"In the Giro, I realized that my feeling in stage races improves day by day. I hope these qualities will help me in the future. After last year, the Tour is a new challenge for me, but I haven't decided yet whether I will race both the Giro and the Tour or just one or the other. After the Classics, I'm going to try to transform myself a little bit for the stage races," Cavalli said.

Cavalli intends to start racing in the UAE Tour, which will be added to the Women's World Tour in 2023, followed by Strade Bianche and the Ardennes Classics.
