BikeExchange's men's and women's teams will have new sporting directors in 2023, with retired Spanish racer Rafael Valls joining the men's program and Briton Megan Chard and Canadian Sean Clark on the women's team. Matt White, who was head sporting director this year, will be given a broader role as high performance and racing director for both the men's and women's teams.
General Manager Brent Copeland said White's expanded role is "an area that requires attention to detail, and few people in professional cycling have the level of experience that "Whitey" has."
." As an organization, we continue to seek improvement across the board, and this new role will help improve many of the team's performance areas.
Chard, assistant director of the St. Piran Continental team, will join the women's team along with Clark, sport director of the Instafund team.
Copeland said the new additions "bring a great deal of enthusiasm, motivation, and extra resources.
White will continue to work with the men's team while keeping close contact with the women's team and helping the new sports director get up and running.
"The change in roles will give me more opportunities to step up and lead in different races. I am really looking forward to working more with the women's team than I did before and continuing the growth and evolution of the team," White said.
Clark and Chard will work with Martin Vestby on the women's world team.
"Team BikeExchange-Jayco is a really nice corporate environment, the staff is treated really well, and there is a really good camaraderie among the riders," Clark said.
"It's a team that is known for hard work and having fun together, which is exactly what I was looking for and a dream place for me. I've spent a lot of time with Martin and Meg and they are a really good crew. We work super well together and I can't wait for the season to start."
Chard also had the opportunity to meet with the staff and riders and said he is eager to get started.
"It's a great opportunity for me and I'm committed to making the most of it and I believe with this group we can accomplish a lot next season and in the future. It's an exciting moment to be joining such an organization and it will be a great step for the team to have its first female sports director."
Meanwhile, Bals is making the transition from professional rider to sporting director a year after getting off the bike.
"Switching almost directly from a motorcycle to a team car is a big challenge for me, but I am confident that I can contribute a lot to the development of this very interesting project," Bals said.
