Silca incorporates graphene in new chain wax to save half a watt

Silca recently introduced three new products: one is dedicated to the gravel sector, the other to wax chains in less time.

Tire inflators consist of the new Terra track pump, which features a non-linear dial for more precise inflation at lower pressures and is an update of the original Eolo CO2 inflator head featured in our Best CO2 Inflators list. The Eolo IV has a valve dial for better control of gas flow.

The addition of Nanene, a proprietary graphene product, to the already very fast Secret Chain Blend wax, further saves wattage and extends chain life.

Unless you are blessed with your own mechanics, an ultrasonic cleaner, or have deep enough pockets to buy pre-treated chains, you probably haven't yet dabbled in the geeky world of wax chains.

But for those of you who like to dip your drivetrain in the hot stuff, Silca has a new, faster wax option and a new gravel-specific track pump for the discerning customer.

Silca's headline-making news is the launch of "Hot Wax X," an all-new nanene-infused chain wax.

Graphene is becoming one of the most cutting-edge materials of its time in the bicycle industry, being used in everything from frames to very expensive brake pads. Graphene's basic form is a single layer of carbon atoms, but according to Silka, a single layer is not particularly useful. In the form of Nanene, an extremely pure, several-layer-thick graphene produced by a patented process, the American brand is a bit more useful, he believes.

Adding Nanene to a hot wax chain melt based on the already available Silca Secret Chain Blend would reduce the drivetrain wattage penalty by 0.5 watts over the Secret Blend, or a basic chain lube Silca claims that it can reduce the wattage penalty by up to 12 watts, assuming It also extends the application interval (the distance that can be traveled before the chain is rewaxed) to 800 km, and the total life of the chain can be extended to 30,000 km, according to the company. [However, information obtained from Absolute Black's graphene brake pads in the past indicates that graphene is added as a friction modifier instead of copper, as well as the ability to fill microscopic pores in the metal surface of the chain, as this pad claims in the brake rotor, and that nanene has additional lubricating properties, it is speculated.

Hot Wax X costs $165 for a 300 g can of solid wax. By comparison, Super Secret costs $40 for a 500 g can of pellet wax.

Elsewhere at Silca today, as well as the Eolo CO2 inflator update, is an all-new gravel-only pump called Terra If you are an old Silca fan, you may recognize the Terra name. The company initially brought a large number of low-pressure pumps to market in the 1980s, but now that the gravel boom has arrived, the company has revisited the concept and resurrected the name.

We recently finished a roundup of all the best bicycle pumps. But if you're looking for something more specialized, especially for larger tires, the new Silca Terra track pump may be an option.

The Terra floor pump has a unique non-linear gauge, with half of the dial face from 0 to 30 psi and the other half up to 120 psi. This way, at low pressures, where accuracy is more important, 0.5 psi is possible. It can be played in 5 psi increments, with larger increments at the higher end of the scale.

Naturally, being a Silca product, the construction is upscale. A wooden handle and an all-metal chuck with a reversible head finish the package in a color scheme that looks more like a vintage Toyota Land Cruiser than a truck pump. Perhaps it is the graveyard-specific coloring.

Pricing for Terra and Eolo has not yet been determined.
