Shake-dry fabrics are retired by Gore

According to reports, Gore is discontinuing production and manufacturing of its very popular Gore-Tex Shakedry material.

Gore introduced the Shakedry material in 2016 to great acclaim and it has since proven to be a very popular and desirable choice for cycling and running jackets. In fact, Gore-Tex Shakedry garments even come with a "guaranteed dry keep" promise.

The construction of this material, with no outer fabric and a waterproof membrane on the outside, means that water does not soak in, but simply beads up and runs off. As the name implies, a few light shakes from the outside of the jacket can remove most of the water.

In a report on Road.cc, the brand states that "Gore-Tex Shake Dry has been and will continue to be the centerpiece of GoreWear products to meet the needs of endurance athletes in all weather conditions." Unfortunately, Gore-Tex Shakedry technology is no longer offered by Gore Fabrics due to ongoing supply challenges, but we are excited about Gore-Tex Shakedry technology and as such, we have spent the last year stocking it so that we can offer it until our current inventory We have invested in the position."

Our understanding is that when the Shakedry product inventory runs out, it will run out for good, but Gore Wear (its own consumer brand of cycling apparel) is stockpiling fabric so that it can continue to serve its customers.

As a result, competing brands' Shake Dry products will almost certainly be phased out. In fact, this has already begun. While researching for our recent Best Waterproof Cycling Jackets guide, we were unable to obtain samples of certain competitor products.

"We have always had fabric supply issues," explained a representative from 7 Mesh, the makers of the Oro Shake Dry Jacket." Oro will be discontinued with this next shipment," he explained."

Meanwhile, Castelli's UK distributor, Saddleback, stated, "Since AW22, Castelli has not used Shakedry. The "Slicker Pro" jacket uses a material described as "a two-layer, ultra-lightweight 50 g/m2 waterproof breathable fabric and a PFC-free external microporous polyurethane membrane.

If you're considering investing in a Gore-Tex Shakedown Jacket, you might want to secure it before stocks run out. It is unlikely that such a popular material will be discontinued, at least not without plans for a replacement. As of now, we don't know what that will look like, but we will keep an ear to the ground for news and updates.
