Giacomo Nizzolo broke his collarbone in a crash during training this weekend, his Israeli Premier Tech team announced on Sunday.
It was the second fracture of the season for the 33-year-old, who missed most of the Classic after breaking his wrist on the final descent from Poggio in Milan-San Remo.
According to the team's social media, Nizzolo was involved in a crash while training in Switzerland and broke his right collarbone. This means he will be able to recover without surgery.
"This injury will not affect his preparation for the 2023 season," the team said.
What the 2023 season will look like for Nizolo and Israel Premier Tech remains to be seen. The team did not finish in the top 18 in the UCI's three-year world rankings and thus did not meet the sport's criteria to participate in the World Tour from 2023 to 2026.
However, team owner Sylvan Adams was ready to file a legal challenge against the UCI when he was interviewed by Cycling News at a WorldTour race in Canada.
He called the team's "disastrous spring" caused by a number of riders contracting COVID-19 "force majeure."
There are rumors that the UCI may consider keeping 20 teams in the World Tour, which would mean that top pro team Lotto-Doustney would not be obligated to be invited to the Grand Tour unless organizers were deprived of a wild card slot.
There were also rumors that the race would increase the size of the peloton so that more teams could be invited, but the UCI appears to have quashed this speculation; the UCI licensing committee will decide this month which teams will receive World Tour licenses.
If Israel Premier Tech does not join the World Tour, Nizzolo may be able to exercise his contract option and move to another team.
