Filippo Ganna starts the 2023 season at the Vuelta a San Juan

Filippo Ganna will start the 2023 season at the Vuelta a San Juan. The Vuelta a San Juan is scheduled to return to the UCI calendar in January after the last two editions were cancelled due to the COVID-19 epidemic.

Ganna most recently rode in the colors of the Italian National Team at the 2020 Vuelta a San Juan, finishing second overall behind Lemco Evenpoel. This time, Ganna will be competing for Ineos Grenadiers, the first WorldTour team to confirm its presence in Argentina.

The 2023 Vuelta a San Juan will be held from January 22 to 29.

"The 2022 season is over and we will meet again in 2023 with renewed energy and new, important goals. I am happy to start the season with the team at the Vuelta a San Juan," Gana said in a video posted on Instagram (opens in new tab).

"It will be a great opportunity to get back in the saddle with new goals and new results."

Ganna recently attended the Ineos team's preseason get-together in Nice, but has yet to outline the rest of the 2023 race program.

The Italian finished the 2022 season with a remarkable performance on the track. After setting a UCI Hour record of 56.792 km in Grenchen, he set a new world record of 3:59.636 in the individual pursuit at the UCI Track World Championships in Paris. He was the first athlete to break 4 minutes in the Pursuit at 4 km above sea level.

Ganna had a mixed 2022 campaign on the road. He won six time trial races, including the national title, but lost the time trial world title in Wollongong, suffered a slow puncture in the rainy opening time trial in Copenhagen, and missed out on the yellow jersey at the Tour de France.

Instead of returning to the Tour de France in 2023, he is expected to target the cobbled classics and the time trial stage of the Giro d'Italia.
