Blanca Vas and Anna Shackley have extended their contracts with Team SD Works through 2024. They are two of the biggest talents in women's cycling and will continue to grow and refine their specific goals over the next two seasons.
Vas signed with the team as a trainee in August 2021 and competed in her first full season on the Women's WorldTour this year, finishing fourth at the 2021 UCI Road World Championships, fourth in cross-country MTB at the Tokyo Olympics, and winning consecutive national road and time trial titles
A multi-discipline rider, Vass is currently competing in the cyclocross season and plans to return to road racing and mountain biking in the spring.
"It may not have been immediately obvious to the public, but Blanca Vass once again showed a strong performance for her age in her last road season," said sport manager Danny Stamm.
"In 2021, she had some great, unexpected results. This year she continued to grow and ran her first full road season. She is getting much stronger. She was especially impressive in the tough one-day races." [Blanca is a rider who can do anything and wants it all. In the future we will see what she can specialize in the most."
[10Vas cites one-day races and hilly classics as the sporting disciplines she is best suited to, but she hopes to specialize in cobbled classics in the future. Next year, Vas will be bouncing between road, cyclo-cross, and mountain biking, with the goal of competing in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"When I was able to extend my contract, I didn't have to think long. I can continue to combine road, cyclo-cross, and mountain biking in the team. So next year I'll be riding a few more mountain bike races to try to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics." This season was the first time I've participated in a fairly full road program. I learned a lot. Being part of the best team in the world with Danny Stamm, Anna van der Breggen, and Lars Boom as sport directors, and having experienced top riders like Chantal Black and Demi Vollering next to me, is a big advantage. I haven't decided yet where my biggest opportunity on the road lies. I like one-day races. I like the hill classics, but in the future I would like to know the cobblestone classics. Aside from the sporting aspect, I also like the atmosphere of the team. I feel really at home here and am happy to continue cycling in this environment in the future."
[16Shackley competed in the Women's World Tour with SD Works in 2021 and competed in the Tokyo Olympics.
Although she missed this year's Giro d'Italia Donne due to COVID-19, she finished 15th overall in the Iturria women's race, 14th in the Vuelta a Burgos Feminas, 7th in the Challenge by La Vuelta, and 10th in the Tour de Romandie.
"This year she proved her talent. In the final classes of the Serratigit Challenge by La Vuelta and the Tour de Romandie Feminine, she placed in the top 10. She made tremendous progress this year, but also suffered setbacks. For example, she missed the Giro d'Italia Donne due to a coronary infection. Her fall was very strong," Stamm said.
Shackley said her first year in 2021 with SD Walks was tough, having just joined the Women's World Tour, but she was happy with her second season racing with the team.
"We made good progress in 2022. I was able to do my best in the Hill Classics and in the heavier round work. I certainly had good results in the fall. This motivates me going into the winter for the upcoming season," she said.
"With Team SD Walks I am having fun. I am growing well here. There is a good team atmosphere between the riders and the staff. I feel at home here."
