There is no denying how much this first professional victory meant to Erlend Bricla (Uno-X Pro Cycling). The Norwegian had been chasing this win since the first stage of the Tour de Langkawi, when he was in crisis at a crossroads in his career.
The 25-year-old's season is almost over, but there is no certainty about the next season, as he learned a few weeks ago that his contract with the team he turned pro with in 2020 will not be renewed. 'We tried every day and the players supported me every day,'
"I've been trying every day, I've been trying every day.
On Sunday, Bricla upset the top two on the podium in the first stage. He then finished second behind Gleb Silica (Astana-Kazakstan), and his podium finish in front of the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur was the best result of his career, but not enough.
"I proved that it is really possible to win here and that I have the level needed to win this race," Brikula said.
This time, Siritsa was unable to catch Brikula, who took the lead with around 150 meters to go and held on.
"When the race started I went for the win early. I know I am fast in finishes like this, so no one could pass me," Bricla said.
His victory in the 120.4-km stage from George Town to Alor Setar on Penang Island means he leaves the 2. pro rank Tour de Langkawi with at least a stage win and second place, and fourth and fifth places. He now wears the green sprinter's jersey, and with this win he is one point ahead of Siritsa.
Brikula has been struggling with poor health in the first half of the season, including COVID-19, but has been gaining strength in recent months, peaking in Langkawi.
"It was really in the second half of the season that I felt like myself. But my contract with my team wasn't extended, so I really don't have a team for next year yet," Brikula said
. So the last few weeks have been pretty tough for me, and I've been emotional. Hopefully this will open up more opportunities."
