Joerd Backes (Alpecin-Desseuninck), less than three weeks after his first professional victory in Coppa Agostini, already won his second stage in the Tour de Langkawi on stage 7.
Bax won a three-way sprint after jumping from the chase group into an early breakaway on a stage that was originally scheduled to finish on the summit of Gunung Raya. However, due to a landslide caused by heavy rain, the course was changed at the last minute to a course more suited for a break with undulating terrain and two Category 3 sprints.
"The moment I attacked, I knew I had a chance," Bax, who attacked with 14km to go, told Cycling News after the stage. But my earphones weren't working right and I couldn't hear the advantage from the car."
"I looked back and didn't see anyone, so it was a bit of guesswork. I was confident in the sprint. I was confident in the sprint, and I didn't know all the guys, so it was a bit of a gamble, but I knew I was fast."
Bax went up the left side of the finish straight, dodging an early jump by Willie Smits and finishing ahead of the China Glory rider and Adria Moreno (Burgo-BH).
"This confirms my victory from a few weeks ago. I had a good stage race in Luxembourg and I won. I had a good stage race in Luxembourg, and I won."
The 26-year-old Dutch rider finished second in the first stage of the Tour de Luxembourg in September, finishing fourth overall. He then won the Coppa Agostoni (Giro delle Brianze) and continued his good form in the Tour de Langkawi, his last race with Alpecin des Seuninck before moving to UAE Team Emirates in 2023.
"I gained a lot of confidence for next year. I want to thank Alpecin. They gave us a chance. Bax, who moved to Alpecin Deceuninck this season from Continental team Metec Solarwatt p/b Mantel, stepped up from 1.1 wins in the Coppa Agostoni-Giro delle Brianze to 2.pro wins in the eight-day Malaysia Tour, and now He steps up again and is looking for his first win on the World Tour.
"I always keep in mind that I can win and not settle for second place. I like to run for others, but I also like to win, so I try not to lose that feeling."
