Barbara Guariski has signed a two-year contract with SD Worx to augment Lorena Wiebes' lead-out train in sprints throughout the 2023 season. [SD Worx manager Danny Stam said, "With the addition of Lorena Wiebes, we were looking for reinforcements to prepare the sprints.
"We didn't have a real sprint train, but we needed a lead-out train for Lorena. With Elena Cecchini, Christine Majerus, Roneke Uneken, and Barbara Guariski, we had the right people for it."
"Barbara is an experienced rider and knows how to pick her positions in the sprints. She will play an important role in the sprint train."
Barbara Guariski, 32, has made a career out of sprinting, winning stages of the Giro d'Italia Donne, Route de France, and Thuringian Ladies Tour, as well as the one-day races Sparkassen Giro and Omloop van Borsle.
He spent three seasons with Movistar before joining SD Walks. Prior to that, he was a member of Team Virtue, Canyon SRAM, and Italy-based teams Ale Cipollini, Top Girls Fassaboltolo, and Michela Fanini Rocks.
Guarikki will join compatriot Elena Cecchini, who has renewed her contract for another season, as one of the team's on-road captains.
"When I heard through Elena that the team was interested in me, I was already honored," Guaricchi said.
At the Tour de France Femme in July, it was announced that Wiebes would break his contract with Team DSM and sign a three-year deal with SD Worx starting in 2023, using a "better offer" clause.
With 23 wins so far this season, Wiebes is arguably the best sprinter in the women's peloton, and SD Worx plans to build a sprint train around this Dutchwoman that will rival the top sprinters in the women's World Tour.
Guarikki said that the move to SD Worx and the partnership with Weaves represents a new adventure in her career.
"I've been running in the peloton for years, but I think this is a new chapter in my career. It's a switch that I couldn't have made any more. I am looking forward to working with Lorena Wiebes. I feel very motivated to take on this adventure," Guaricki said.
