Remco Evenpoel was named the 2022 Belgian Male Athlete of the Year and won the Crystal Bicycle Award.
Even though the other results may have come as a surprise to the Quick-Step Alphavinir racer, as he already won the award in 2019, which was Evenpoel's first year as a professional, this is only further confirmation of his outstanding 2022 season.
Evenpoel's major victories in 15 races this year include the UCI Road World Championships, Vuelta a España, Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and Clasica San Sebastian.
A total of 1,100 points were awarded by a voting committee consisting primarily of journalists, former winners, and federation officials, with Wout Van Aert (Jumbo Visma), winner of the same award in 2020 and 2021, coming in a distant second with 870 points. third place went to Jasper Filipsen (Alpecin Deceuninck) with 436 points, Lotto Soudal sprinter Arnaud de Lee with 398 points, and Evenpoel teammate Yves Lampert with 106 points.
"I won the Vuelta, but I think I lost my balance at the World Championships, and after three years I have the Kristallen Fietz again," Evenpoel said in a team press release. [Being named Men's Player of the Year for my country is special, unique, and gratifying. [The win in Liège-Bastogne-Liège changed everything and gave me motivation and strength for the second half of the season.
Lotte Kopecký was also nothing short of a surprise, winning this award sponsored by Het Laatste Nieuws for the third year in a row.
In 2022, the 26-year-old SD Worx rider not only won the Belgian national time trial title, but also the Strade Bianche and Tour of Flanders. He also took second place at Paris-Roubaix and a silver medal at the World Championships in Australia.
With a total of 1,118 points, Kopecký had an advantage over Evenpoel, who finished second with 666 points to Julie de Vilde's (Planteur Plat) 666.
In the third category, Belgian national trainer Sven Van Torenhout was named Coach of the Year. Van Tollenhout, who represented Belgium with six medals at the Road World Championships, took first place with 660 points, ahead of the Quick Step Alpha Vinyl duo of Klaas Lodewijk and Gerd Van Bont (364 points). Longtime Quick-Step Alpha Vinyl team manager Patrick Leferet came in third with 330 points.
Belgium's six medals in Australia included gold and bronze for Evenpoel in the elite men's road race and time trial, silver for Kopecký in the elite women's road race, silver for Alec Segart in the U-23 time trial, junior Vlad van Mechelen won bronze in the men's road race and Fe Yoris won bronze in the junior women's TT.
