Remco Evenpole: "No decision yet" on Giro d'Italia and Tour de France in 2023

Lemko Evenpoel, who was named the top Belgian male cyclist at Wednesday's Crystal Bike Awards, said his Grand Tour plans for 2023 are still undecided. [The Belgian, who won his first Grand Tour at the Vuelta a España, has also been very successful in the road world championships from Liège-Bastogne-Liège.

He appears to have a choice between the Giro d'Italia and the Tour de France next season, and despite earlier comments suggesting a return to Italy in May, he said he has not fully decided on his main goal for next season.

"In principle, I'm sticking to that plan," he told Het Nieuwsblad when asked about the Giro. 'But I haven't made a decision yet. We are waiting for the Giro and the Tour route."

"We already know some things about the Giro. We expect the Tour route to be announced soon."

"The time trial kilometer will definitely play its part. It's a big dream of mine to one day conquer all three."

Evenpoel may be undecided about the 2023 Grand Tour, but he has ruled out defending his Vuelta a España title. Instead, he has decided to return to the road world championships next August. Next year will be the UCI's first "mega world championship" with seven additional cycling events.

"There won't be a Vuelta anyway. 'The Vuelta is in the same month as the World Championships and I want to concentrate on the World Championships. I want to concentrate on the time trial. In the fall I could have Il Lombardia as another goal."

On another note, Evenapoel denies leaving Quick Step Alfa Vinyl. The possibility of a big-money move to Ineos Grenadiers has dominated the rumor pages over the past month, but was easily dismissed by Quick-Step boss Patrick Lefebvre and Evenapoel himself.

He reaffirmed his commitment to the Belgian team, with which he is under contract until 2026, noting that leaving would mean abandoning teammates (and friends) he has run with for the past four seasons.

"If everything goes according to plan, I will fulfill my contract until the end of 2026," he told Het Laatste Nieuws. We've been building up for two years and with our victory in the Vuelta this season, we've accomplished something beautiful." We have built up for two years and with our victory in the Vuelta this season, we have achieved something beautiful.

"There are many players in the team who know what role they can play. They are highly motivated. And my teammates are my friends. And it's more beautiful to achieve a goal with your friends. I'm not just going to leave."
