Simon Yates was forced to end his season after falling during training on Sunday.
BikeExchange-Jayco announced Monday that Yates "will miss Il Lombardia after suffering a minor injury in a crash during training yesterday."
The Australian team announced that Yates is "out for the 2022 racing season and will focus on rest, recovery, and preparation for 2023."
Yates was forced to abandon the Vuelta for COVID-19, but according to BikeExchange-Jayco, he is recovering and motivated for the hilly Italian classic. Yates, who made his return to racing last week, finished 12th in the Coppa Agostoni, but failed to finish in Saturday's Giro delle Miglia.
BikeExchange-Jayco had hoped Yates would lead the team in the final mountain classic and gain more UCI ranking points in order to avoid relegation to the WorldTour in 2023.
Fortunately, BikeExchange-Jayco emerged from the relegation zone as Michael Matthews scored points in the World Championships and others continued to score points.
Israel Premiatek and Lot Soudal have failed to score any significant points to overtake their rivals in recent weeks and appear destined to be relegated from the World Tour.
