What do Canyon Bicycles, Ironman Triathlon, and a fish with a very long name have in common?

Canyon, the German direct sales brand, will unveil a new limited edition version of its top-of-the-line Speedmax triathlon bike at the Ironman World Championships in Kona on the Big Island of Hawaii this week.

Called humuhumu nukunukuapuaa, this fish is the official state fish of Hawaii. A type of reef triggerfish, also called a rectangular or wedge-tail triggerfish, it is colored in a palette of bright blue, white, and yellow; Canyon says the custom paint on this limited edition bike is designed to mimic these colors.

"The wonderful island of Hawaii inspires me a lot," explains designer Lucas Beck. 'I was especially drawn to those in the front row underwater seats at the first part of the World Championships.' The state's special fish, the humuhumu nukunukuapuaa, catches the eye with its unique and beautiful colors."

Like Iron Man, the 22-letter word humuhumunukunukuapua'a can be broken down into three parts: humuhumu is the Hawaiian word for all species of triggerfish, nukunuku loosely translates to "nose" or "beak" and apua'a means pig. Together they mean "triggerfish with a snout like a pig," referring to the appearance of this aquatic creature. It is also a reference to the pig-like growl it makes when threatened. No announcement has yet been made as to whether Speedmax will mimic this.

Canyon says that the new Speedmax is equipped with "unbeatable" components, but this is something that is somewhat suspect, as it was later revealed to consist of Shimano's second best, or Ultegra Di2 groupset, which is also inferior to the more stable Dura-Ace. Reviews of the Ultegra R8100 give it a high rating of 4.5 out of 5, placing it at the pinnacle of road bike groupset.

The Ultegra chainset is paired with a 4iiiii Precision power meter. The cockpit features Canyon's own CP0019 base bar and CP0021 aero bar with triathlon-specific mono extensions, and Canyon chose one of the best triathlon saddles we have tested, the Selle Italia Watt Superflow, one of the best triathlon saddles we tested.

The wheels are DT Swiss ARC 1400 Dicut, the more premium 1100 series sibling that recently won our aero wheel wind tunnel test.

The bike, whose full title, Speedmax CF SLX Hawaii LTD, matches the number of letters on the designed fish, will be available in a limited run of just 100 starting October 7. The price is €8,499.00.
