Primosz Roglic undergoes major surgery to repair repeated shoulder dislocations.

Primoš Roglic will undergo surgery today (Monday) for a long-standing shoulder injury.

Roglic, who rides for Jumbo-Visma, suffered a dislocated shoulder and additional injuries to his back this summer when he crashed on a cobbled stage during the first week of the Tour de France.

Roglic also dislocated his shoulder in a crash on the final day of the 2021 Paris-Nice, and has revealed that it is a recurrent problem and will undergo surgical treatment.

"It's no secret that I've dislocated it many times already. It's getting to the point where it has to heal already," Roglic told Slovenian media after a charity event in Maribor on Sunday.

It is unclear what specific surgery Roglic will undergo, but it will be a major operation.

"I don't want to think about what that means right now, but it's no small thing. They're going to cut out a piece of bone and move it to where it's dislocated."

Roglic crashed out of the Vuelta a España while fighting for the red jersey for the fourth year in a row.

He won Paris-Nice and the Criterium du Dauphiné, but was overtaken by Jonas Vingegaard in the Jumbo-Visma leader hierarchy. Vingegaard won the Tour de France, defeating Tadej Pogachar (UAE Team Emirates), but was assisted by the injured Roglic on the crucial stage to the Granon Pass.

Roglic reportedly joked that his role in Jumbo-Visma was still "to win races" and that he hoped surgery would bring him back stronger in 2023, his 33rd birthday.

"The arm will be immobilized for 6-8 weeks after surgery, after which it will have a passive range of motion. Fortunately, it's not May or June yet," he said.

"I've reached the limit where I have to fix these things in order to get even stronger and start preparing for the new challenges of the new season. We have to respect what they say. I will do everything in my power to get back in the car as soon as possible."
