Details of the altercation and assault between Mathieu Van Der Pol and two teenage girls at a Sydney hotel have emerged, revealing what happened just hours before Van Der Pol was to compete in a men's road race in Australia.
A series of videos, supposedly taken by the teenage girl, were released online and sent to several media outlets. Cycling News saw one of them online, which appears to show a man chasing the two at the Novotel Brighton Resort Hotel near Sydney, where the altercation occurred.
Cycling News, like other media outlets, declined to publish the video because of the possibility of the two girls being identified. The authenticity of the video has not been confirmed.
Details of the court documents were also reported, which partially contradict what Van der Pol initially described as a "small dispute."
Dutch was charged Monday with general assault and pleaded guilty. He was fined $1,500 but intends to appeal. He was allowed to leave Australia on Monday but could be banned from returning to Australia for up to three years.
Alpecin Deceuninck's team manager, Christophe Roudhoft, denied that the altercation was physical, but the Daily Mail and other Australian media reported that according to police statements, the 14-year-old girl "ran into a corner, covered her face and sat down," while Van der Pol "grabbed her by both arms and squeezed her, yelling and pushing her against the wall," according to the facts.
The girl suffered "a minor carpet burn graze on her right elbow and redness on her left forearm."
The other teenager was "in the same room" while van der Pol chased the other girl. As she "tried to leave the room," Van Der Paul "opened his arms" and pushed her against the wall, which allegedly caused her to fall "to the ground."
According to the Daily Mail (open in new tab), the police arrived about five minutes later and Van der Pol was arrested and taken to the Kogala police station.
He allegedly admitted to entering the room and grabbing the arm of one of the young women, stating that he was "quite irritated that the girls kept making noise and knocking on the room (even though his girlfriend had previously told him to stop)."
According to AD.nl (opens in new tab), a second video reveals details of an argument between Van der Pol and the girls' parents, in which he denies touching the girls. AD.nl contacted the oldest of the three teenage girls, claimed to have seen the video.
According to AD, the following exchange was filmed:
Van der Paul: "I didn't touch anyone."
Mother: "Shut up, you're on camera."
MvdP: "Show it, no problem."
Mother: "Stay out of my room.
MvdP: "You are not allowed to knock on my door for 3 fucking hours."
Mother: "You threatened us.
MvdP: "Then call the police and tell them about this."
Mother: "I already did. They are on their way."
MvdP: "Okay, are you sure?"
Van der Pol left the Sydney courthouse on Monday morning and said nothing on his return to Europe. When he landed at the Brussels airport on Tuesday afternoon, he reacted to the video coverage.
"Anyone who knows me knows that I have never hurt anyone," van der Poel told Het Laatste Nieuws in a video interview.
"There are a lot of stories that I pushed, but that is absolutely not true. We don't know what happened; there are two versions of one story, and being in Australia it is very difficult to deal with that."
On Monday evening, his Alpecin Deceuninck team issued a short statement and is awaiting further information.
"We are mindful of the events that have taken place in Wollongong in the last 48 hours. Needless to say, all players were defeated here.
"Initially, our focus was on providing legal assistance in the field and helping Mathieu van der Poel to return home quickly. We would then like to clarify the course of the case through dialogue with Mathieu van der Poel and Team NL officials. Based on this, we will determine what further steps should be taken.
"I would like to emphasize that respect for others, both inside and outside the peloton, is and always has been a core value of Alpecin Deceuninck. That is why we want to follow this up in the right way. Only then will Team Alpecin Deceuninck and Mathieu van der Pol communicate again on this matter."
The Dutch team is also investigating what happened, as it turns out that van der Pol was sleeping in a hotel on a different floor from his teammate and partner Roxanne Bertels when the altercation occurred. National coach Koos Mollenhout explained that Van der Poel had a cold upon arrival in Australia and was given a separate room, but Van der Poel stayed in that room with his partner until Sunday's road race.
Van der Poel said he has not yet decided whether he will race again during the 2022 road season.
