Wout Van Aert has signed a new contract with Jumbo Visma that will keep him with the club until the end of 2026. The Belgian had been under contract with the team until the end of 2024, but after discussions over the past few weeks, the terms were changed and the contract was extended.
"I feel very good with this team. We have already proven that we can perform at our best here. It is also thanks to the facilities we get there," Van Aert said in a statement released by Jumbo Bisma on Wednesday.
"I was surprised that the team wanted to negotiate my contract again, but it's a good assessment. We quickly agreed. I've been able to get better over the last four years."
Earlier this month, Van Art's agent, Jeff Van den Bosch, admitted to Het Nieuwsblad (opens in new tab) that he is renegotiating his contract with Jumbo Visma. Van Aert joined Jumbo-Visma in March 2019 after leaving Nick Nuyens' Verandas Willems-Cleran team in acrimonious fashion.
Since joining Jumbo-Visma, Van Aert has won the Milan-San Remo, Strade Bianche, Ghent-Wevelgem, Amstel Gold Race, Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, and E3 Harelbeke, and nine stages in the Tour de France.
In recent years, he has also taken on the role of supporting GC riders in Jumbo-Visma, most notably at this year's Tour, where he made up the pace at Hautacam, causing Tadej Pogacar to fall and Jonas Vinegaard to win.
Van Aert had a hat-trick of stage wins at this year's Tour, helping him to take the points prize. He also took the yellow jersey and was named the most combative rider in the race.
"Sometimes I hear criticism that teams give me too few chances. But I think the opposite is true. Because of the growth I have experienced with this team, I have already been given more possibilities than I would have otherwise," Van Aert said.
"With another team, I could have been the sole leader in a Grand Tour, but I wouldn't have had the same legs. Jumbo-Visma has the best teammates and is well prepared. I have already gained a lot of joy from the success of myself and the team. It's great to be a part of it. I think it's an ideal image. I'm happy to find my home here."
Van Aert is currently participating in the world championships in Wollongong and will be among the favorites to win the elite men's road race on Sunday. He warmed up for the world championships with a win in the Bretagne Classic and a second place in the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal.
