Georgia Williams will finish her tenure at BikeExchange-Jayco in 2023 for a new opportunity at EF Education-TIBCO-SVB.
The New Zealander will bring a decade of experience to the U.S. team as well as help the team achieve its goal of a top-five world ranking.
"It's going to get me out of my comfort zone and into something new, challenging, and exciting. It was really fascinating," Williams said.
"The team's vision, the goal of getting into the top five on the World Tour, and how they saw me fitting into the team as a domestique and sometimes as a leader, was all really cool.
Williams, a former cross-country runner, began racing bicycles on the track after getting into the sport through a national talent search program. She began incorporating road racing into her program and signed her first professional contract with BePink in 2013, where she spent the first four years of her career.
After racing on the track at the 2014 Commonwealth Games and the 2016 Olympics, she was ready to focus full-time on the road. She then signed with the GreenEdge program in 2017 and excelled under Orica Scott, Mitchelton Scott, and BikeExchange-Jayco.
"Since then, I've fallen in love with road cycling. I don't want to go back to track. I liked track, but I was done with it. I competed in the Olympics and I competed in the Commonwealth Games on track.
She now aims to represent New Zealand at the 2024 Paris Olympics. She said, "A new chapter, the road. Now the question for me is, can I compete in the Olympics on the road?"
She said.
Williams, of Bike Exchange-Jayco, has played a key role in mountain classics, stage races, and time trials. She is the reigning New Zealand time trial champion and has won the title four times. This year she finished second in the Tour de Suisse time trial and took bronze in the Commonwealth Games time trial.
She hopes to use her professional experience to help the young athletes at EF Education-TIBCO-SVB.
"I have almost 10 years of experience and I want to pass that on. It would be a shame if I retire in a few years and can't pass it on. It would be really special for me to be able to go my own way and now be a mentor like the past players have done for me," Williams said.
"On the road, I'm not just looking for opportunities for myself. I love working for other players in domestiques. I get a lot of satisfaction out of it. I talked to Linda (Jackson) and realized that this team is good for me."
[26Williams entered the year with Bike Exchange Jayco ready to reset after three tumultuous seasons; in 2019, her season was interrupted by a disease called RED-S (Relative Energy Deficiency in Sports). In 2020, like many others, she missed many races due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Last year, he won two road races and a time trail title, but was sidelined by two concussions late in the season.
Williams is making a fresh start with EF Education-TIBCO-SVB and hopes her versatility will bring her success in the early season races in New Zealand and Australia, as well as the 2023 Spring Classic. I'm pretty flexible," she said. I like time trials. That's my strength. I'm good on the flat, and I can climb a little bit. I'm versatile."
"Australia is close to home, and I have the New Zealand national championships, so I want to start the season well. Then I want to fly to Europe and try to do well in the hilly classics like Strade Bianche, Trofeo Binda, and the Ardennes. These races are really fun for me," Williams said.
