After much uncertainty about whether Julian Alaphilippe would compete in the UCI Road World Championships in Wollongong, Australia, the two-time world champion has been confirmed.
Alaphilippe, who won in Imola and Leuven, crashed and dislocated his shoulder on stage 11 of the Vuelta a España two weeks ago.
His participation in the world championships is in jeopardy, and Quick-Step Alfa Vinyl team boss Patrick Lefebvre said it would be "dangerous" for him to race in Australia, but the French cycling federation (FFC) has admitted that he would be "dangerous" to race in Australia.
"He wants to take risks. If I were him, I would have passed on the World Championships and put everything into the Italian race," Lefevere said last week.
"But I understand the pressure from what is called French politics. We are not paying him for the French team. It would be great to be world champion, but I want him to race in our jersey."
Alaphilippe has endured a hard 2022 campaign plagued by illness and injury. His crash at the Vuelta was the latest misfortune in a year that has included a late start due to illness, injuries from a group crash at Liège-Bastogne-Liège, and a COVID-19 injury at the Tour de Wallonie in July.
Alaphilippe leads a field of nine leading riders in the world championship road race. He will be joined by Romain Bardet, newly naturalized rider Pavel Sivakov, and Tour de France stage winner Christophe Laporte.
Valentin Maduas, Quentin Pascher, Florian Senechal, Remi Cavagna, and Bruno Almirail will also be selected, with Cavagna and Almirail also participating in the individual time trial.
Major climbers such as David Gaudoux, Thibaut Pinot, and Guillaume Martin, sprinter Arnaud Demaret, and puncher Benoit Cosnefrois were not selected.
The French women's team will be led by Audrey Cordon-Lago, who finished second in the Simac Ladies Tour, and Juliette Labou, who finished fourth in the Tour de France Femme. Also selected are Coralie Demay, Marie Le Net and Gladys Verhulst.
Biernik, Le Net and Demay will compete in the mixed relay along with Cavagna, Almirail and U23 rider Eddy Le Huitouze.
