Cervélo has issued an immediate stop-ride notice and mandatory recall to customers who own certain models of R5 and Caledonia 5 road bikes.
Cervélo claims that a problem with the faceplate of the attached stem can cause the handlebar to slip even when the stem bolts are tightened to the correct torque value. According to Cervélo, this problem could cause the rider to lose control of the bike and fall.
Reports indicate that there have been 13 reports of handlebar slippage due to this issue, with one injury reported.
Specifically, the recall covers certain models in the 2022 Cervelo R5 lineup and Caledonia 5, including the frameset and ST31 LT stem itself. The recall initially targeted customers in the U.S. and Canada, but has now been expanded to the entire world, according to Cycling News.
The full list of bikes affected is as follows:
"Safety is our primary concern," the recall page for the Cervélo products states. We are working closely with our authorized distribution partners to ensure that if we feel that safety has been compromised, we respond immediately and get riders back on the road as quickly and safely as possible." It further confirms that this recall does not affect other Cervélo products.
Riders who own the affected bikes are advised to stop using them immediately and contact their local Cervélo dealer to arrange for a free replacement faceplate. Users who purchased their bikes online or who do not have a local dealer can also obtain a form from the Cervélo website.
