Audrey Cordon-Lago admitted to having suffered a stroke a week before her departure for the 2022 UCI Road World Championships.
The French champion did not immediately notice the symptoms, but an MRI confirmed the stroke last Sunday. She revealed that she will now rest and undergo surgery for the heart condition that may have caused the stroke.
"Life always surprises me, but this week I learned more than ever that it matters more than anything," Cordon-Lagotte posted on Instagram.
"A lot of people have made whims, fears of losing, disrespect for the French team ......
"I didn't realize it right away, but I was lucky to be surrounded by the medical staff (Gwenael Maduas, Marilyn Salveta, and Mathieu Le Strat). [I am exhausted, worn out, and saddened, but at the same time grateful and happy to be back with my friends. So, as you can see, my season is over (some will say I'm a crybaby and a softy, but those people should refrain from commenting!) .
"I will be watching my rest and will be undergoing surgery to address the heart issues that caused the accident.
"The moral of the story is that I love my family, my life more than anything else. My family, my friends, the French Cycling Federation, my team, and the care staff at the Central Hospital of Brittany.
"To love vigorously is to live vigorously."
Cordon-Lago has been a member of the Trek-Segafredo team this season in the French championship time trial and road race, the Postnord Volgorda West Sweden team time trial and road race, and a stage win at the Simac Ladies Tour, where she had a remarkable performance and contributed to the team's victories. She also competed for the French national team at the European Championships, where she finished fourth in the time trial.
